Cubase is a digital audio workstation, commonly used to record and edit multi-track audio. The software comes with a range of effects and amps that can be applied on top of the musical instrument input signal. There are more than 400 individual effect plug-ins for an unlimited mix of sounds. In the version 5 release, there is also native support for VST3 virtual instruments from Steinberg's HALion Sonic SE Series on Windows XP or higher operating systems. For Mac users, the latest release allows the user to have multiple MIDI ports on Mac OS X 10.6 or higher using Parallels Desktop for Mac 2 or higher. Cubase also allows for easy importing of media files created with other sound programs, whether produced by Steinberg, Apple Computer or another company. Cubase is able to handle most Microsoft Windows-compatible media formats. Localization of edition texts is available in several languages including English, German and French. Cubase is Steinberg's flagship product, and comes in several different editions, depending on system configuration and features. Cubase LE offers a reduced feature set compared to Standard and Professional, such as only 16 audio tracks and 32 MIDI tracks available at the same time.
